Once upon a time
Beginning a story like this is always a guarantee of "fabulous" tales that lie in store for readers, the perfect style for recounting the birth and adventures of the Registro Italiano Mazda MX-5…

So, as we were saying… once upon a time, in early 1990, Ines Boccato Winchell, a young assistant working in the Press and Public Relations Office of Italy's Mazda Importer at the time, was hard at work translating the first brochure for the new MX-5, a car she had only ever seen on photographs. Just then she looked out the window beside her desk and, lo and behold, she spotted a double-decker truck unloading the first eight MX-5’s imported into Italy. The first to touch ground was a Mariner Blue that made its way through the crowd of employees outside, nothing short of a Marlene Dietrich entrance. Admiring such grace, the on-lookers stood without a word. A very special passion rose up in the young woman's heart that day. And that fire still burns brightly in Ines today - she's now president of the communications firm that coordinates the Registro Italiano Mazda MX-5, on behalf of Mazda Motors Italia.

MX-5 passion is this and more…

A great idea
“Such a special car must have been built for some very special customers," was one of the comments most often heard among the people at Mazda's Italian Importer. Ines' voice could be loudly heard from within the chorus. Why, it was as clear as the nose on anyone's face: a Club was needed to gather all these "very special customers" together. The project was drawn up. Surveys were taken. Data was compiled. The young woman's idea turned out to be a winner, and the huge success of the MX-5 was proof.

The birth of the Club
It's 1993, the year Ines opened her very own communications agency. Among her firm's first projects there's the creation of an MX-5 club for Italy. By 1994 all Italian owners of MX-5’s (some 3.000 in all) had received a cordial letter from the budding entrepreneur, asking their opinion with regard to the founding of a club dedicated to MX-5 owners. More than 200 responses from die-hard MX-5ers came pouring in, along with the questionnaires they had filled out. Thus the Italian MX-5 database was born. Ines Boccato and her trusty sidekick, Patrizia Tontini, sprung into action. Today, this team of pioneers is still dedicated to making the Registro Italiano Mazda MX-5 a club worth belonging to.

New prospects
The presentation of the new MX-5 at the Torino Car Fair in April 1998 kicked off a decisive season for the Registro - from then on, all buyers of new MX- 5’s were automatically registered in the club and awarded a free one-year membership. This proved a highly successful move, and turned the Registro into one of the most important and consolidated MX-5 clubs on the European scene. By the year 2000 membership had reached…2000! We'd evolved into a big club, and we're still growing. Our logo became popular even outside Italy. Our official newsletter, Insieme nel vento (“Together in the Wind”), became a true and much sought out point of reference (like the PdiR Agency itself, founded by Ines Boccato in 1997) - a tool which allowed members to communicate with one another all year round. Registro activity was running more smoothly than ever, with a staff of true sports car fans dedicated to making the right things happen (Hi to Thomas, Miriam, Rita and Danilo). From here, a sense of community spirit burst forth and became the major driving force behind all club life and activities - and ever present at official and "unofficial" events.

One of the first RIM Communication:
the big adventure begins.

The name
The name Registro Italiano Mazda MX-5 (RIM) refers to an association destined to endure by definition. Indeed, the MX-5 is truly one of “tomorrow's classics”: by 2021, models from 1991 will be considered “historical” de jure. Appropriately, the Registro would go on to become Mazda MX-5 Historical Register in order to continue the tradition the club has come to stand for.

Club Meetings
During its long existence, the RIM has organized a huge number of National Meetings, it has participated in numerous European Meetings, and has collaborated on a host of local initiatives sponsored by Mazda Dealers or by RIM club Members turned “event organizers”. The first meeting was held in May 1995, at the picturesque Castello di San Gaudenzio, near Pavia. Twenty crews met and cruised the soft, verdant hills of the Oltrepò Pavese district. In the meantime, the folks at RIM had begun contacting other European and American MX-5 clubs, and sparking inspirational exchanges of magazines, newsletters, as well as meetings. The Club's participation in its  first international meeting came in April 1995, when a delegation of the Registro represented Italy at the International Meeting at Ostenda, organized by our good friend Ronald Van Kelst of the Belgian club. In March 1997 seven crews from the RIM took part in the “London Trip”, crossing the Channel with teams from throughout Europe. More Italian crews headed for France in 1998 for the “Miata around Paris” meeting. In 2000 two Italian members (Sergio and Damiana Mantegazza) came back from the Bruges event in Belgium with a trunkful of wild stories - in all, 230 MX-5’s were present! MX-5ers from abroad began coming to Italy as well. There was the Varese meeting, the Club's eighth in 1997, with two Dutch crews and three French crews; six Spanish crews joined the eleventh meeting in Arenzano (1999, September 24th, 25th and 26th), along with two special guests from the United States.

Hitting the speedway
The RIM began organizing raceway meetings in 1998, offering crews the chance to test their skills on the Monza Speedway. The following year, the MX-5 Sport Cup was born, thanks to our alliance with the MX-5 club of Köln, Germany, which is headed by Peter Möhr. Only six RIM Crews participated in the style competition against the Germans, but eagerness among other members to join in on the fun was palpable. Over the next three years, as interest kept growing, they would indeed get their chance, as Mazda Day and the legendary style competition became regular events at the Monza Speedway. 87 MX-5 Crews drove in the 2001 event, a veritable army!

The turning point of the second series
The presentation of the new MX-5 at the Torino Car Fair in April 1998 kicked off a decisive season for the Registro - from then on, all buyers of new MX- 5’s were automatically registered in the club and awarded a free one-year membership. This proved a highly successful move, and turned the Registro into one of the most important and consolidated MX-5 clubs on the European scene. By the year 2000 membership had reached…2000! We'd evolved into a big club, and we're still growing. Our logo became popular even outside Italy. Our official newsletter, Insieme nel vento (“Together in the Wind”) that was only on paper in the beginning and only electronic now, became a true and much sought out point of reference - a tool which allowed members to communicate with one another all year round. The owners of the world’s best selling Spider have become, in the following years, Italy’s largest community dedicated to Mazda Mx-5 Brand.

Collaboration with Mazda Motor Italia
The creation of a Mazda branch in Italy in February 2000 signaled a new era for the RIM (now widely referred to as RIM), which eventually led to the great “MX-5 Share the Passion” series in 2002. This two-month Italian tour was made up of weekly Voglia di MX-5 ("Desire for MX-5") events, which culminated in the highly successful National Meeting in Brescia. Mille Curve ("1,000 Curves"), a special event held on May 19, is destined to go down in the RIM record books. Participants couldn't help but remark with glee, "It was one of the most beautiful sights ever seen from aboard an MX-5”. Nearly 100 MX-5’s - that's just about half a kilometer in total length! - snaked their way along winding, ribbonous asphalt for a spectacular afternoon drive indeed.

The Third Generation
The great passion that aims RIM working group and the members’ enthusiasm made the RIM one of Italy’s longest Club, indeed in 2005 were celebrated its first 10 years of activity, a lot for a Car Series Club and still in production. Sometimes it happens that new members are RIM first members children, so the Club anecdotes and its history become like a real heritage.
World changes, and so does Mazda MX-5, with a Third Generation full with all comforts gathering new fans in order to set one again MX-5  at the centre of the market. The big party at Bologna Motorshow for M3 (that’s how fans refer to the series, where M stands for Mazda brand and the number besides is the chronological series of the MX-5 editions produced- M1 from 1989 to 1998, M2 from 1998 to 2005 and M3 since 2005.) has been spectacular. Over 500 members are Mazda Motor Italia guests at the “Zoom Zoom” stand and when the new “Nude in 12 seconds” discovers it’s a storm of stadium applause. Such unforgettable moments, made of enthusiasm and pure passion, how it happens every time every time at the drive of a MX-5. It’s common to feel like knights and princesses, as in a fantasy fairy tale full of adventures and new roads to drive. Well, that's RIM for you, a special world, full of special people with passion for a very special automobile. But this "fairy tale" doesn't end here! There will be lots more fun, thrills and good times ahead. Remember, MX-5ers are a breed apart, so the next time you're out there cruising the streets in your treasured little set of wheels and you spot another Miata of your kind, flash him or her the lights - it's become our official salute!

RIM in the last three years

For “Venti di Scoperte”, 2009 Season has been the most special among all the others along the years: it’s also in that same year where it was celebrated Miata 20th anniversary. For that occasion Mazda Motor Italia and its Sales Network, in collaboration with RIM, organized a calendar full of events starting from the month of April until the end of September contemplating parties in every Meeting and taking place all around Italy, that’s everywhere Mazda stopped.
